Resources for New Entrepreneurs

Resources

If you are a veteran or military spouse looking to take the plunge into entrepreneurship, but you’re not sure where to start – you’re not alone! There is a great deal to consider when starting your own business. For retirees and transitioning veterans, starting in a later phase of your life can be daunting. Fortunately, there are a multitude of actions you can take to build confidence and expertise. We’ve put together a few ideas to get you started.

#1: Get Your Degree

This approach works for some entrepreneurs, but is unnecessary for others. So, how do you know which category you fall into?

Whatever type of business you decide to open, you need to be a subject matter expert in that part of your industry. If you have an interest in a certain area, but you’re not at the expert level – earning your degree can fill in those gaps and add credibility to your portfolio. On the other hand, if you are already an expert in your field of choice – a degree may be overkill. Simply supplementing with business classes can be enough to give you the knowledge you need to run the business.

#2: Utilize the Resources Through IVMF

The Institute for Veterans and Military Families offers educational and vocational training programs for veterans and their families. For the entrepreneurial set, they offer a variety of programs designed to fit the different stages of startup life.

From intensives to networking and competitions, it is worth the time to review the resources the IVMF offers. For more information, listen to our recent podcast with IVMF representatives on Veteran on the Move.

#3: Join a Mastermind Group

One of the biggest challenges of starting a small business is the feeling of isolation – that you’re in it alone. This can be disheartening to new entrepreneurs. Joining a mastermind group gives you a community of like-minded professionals who have been where you are and can offer insight and solutions to common startup problems.
