Avoiding the Next Big War with Army Veteran Austin Bay

Austin Bay is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and author of Embrace the Suck. He has written extensively on current military affairs, and has appeared on NPR’s Morning Edition, Fox News, C-SPAN, MSNBC, CNBC, and Nightline. Bay writes a weekly international affairs column for Creators Syndicate and is a contributing editor at StrategyPage.com. He has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard, the New York Observer, and other publications. Bay served most recently with Headquarters, Multi-National Corps in Iraq in 2004. He was on active duty during Operation Desert Storm and served in Germany in the 1970s. A graduate of Rice University, he has a PhD from Columbia University. He lives in Austin, Texas.
Austin Bay- Experience in the Army
Austin went on active duty for 4 1/2 years in the 1970’s and spent most of that time in Germany working in either armor and mechanized infantry outfits. He then moved to the reserves into some IMA slots and was almost always operations and plans job which was reflective of is background in armor. During Desert Storm Austin served on the Army staff in Washington and at the same time as Dr. Bay he was a special consultant in strategic war game. Austin made full colonel while in the reserves and he had a J-3 strategist slot. His last hoorah was in 2004 in Iraq where he served in the plan section for multinational corp Iraq and had the title of Senior Plans Officer.
Writing On the Regular Basis
Austin has been a weekly syndicated columnist since 2000 with Creators Syndicate and you can find it at strategypage.com. He manages to write about 50 columns a year. In 2015 and 2016 he was writing regularly on national security issues for the New York Observer. The topics he covers include economics and politics. He also is an author of several books. Additionally, Dr. Bay has been an adjunct professor at the University of Texas for 15 years.
