Piecing Together Veterans Untold Stories with Author Stephen Moore

Stephen Moore

Stephen Moore, a sixth generation Texan, is the author of nineteen books on World War II and Texas history. His latest, Uncommon Valor from the Naval Institute Press, follows a Special Forces recon company in Vietnam. Steve, his wife, and their three children make their home north of Dallas, Texas.

While not military himself, Stephen has been writing about military history for about 23 years. He is a marketing advertising professional by trade, but is passionate about collecting history from veterans.

Stephen Moore- Researching Untold Stories

Stephen Moore does his research by going to those guys that were in the trenches and spending time with them and trying to get the untold stories. He wants to know what they were thinking, what they were feeling, not just what might be in some action report.  Stephen wants to hear the real sweat and fear of being out in the jungle and what they experienced.

It’s a scramble because a lot of those guys are gone and the ones I’ve got left or 96, 99, 100 years old, their stories going to be around much longer.” – Stephen Moore

Paying Tribute

Stephen Moore does his research by going to those guys that were in the trenches and spending time with them and trying to get the untold stories. He wants to know what they were thinking, what they were feeling, not just what might be in some action report.  Stephen wants to hear the real sweat and fear of being out in the jungle and what they experienced.

“Speaking with these guys one on one at their reunions and getting the stories. It was an effort just to piece the story together. But what they accomplished was quite remarkable.” – Stephen Moore

Current Project

Stephen has been spending the past couple of years working on a book about naval aviation and the carrier battles in world war two. Stephen has been interviewing some of the fighter pilots, specifically some of the aces that flew during the Okinawa campaign in 1945. These are the guys that went up against the massive kamikaze waves coming in daily.  Kind of a last ditch effort to save Okinawa and these islands before America moved onto the homeland.

“These guys are 96, 98, some of them are around a hundred years old that I’m talking to and unfortunately or I guess expectedly a handful of them have passed  just since I started taking on this project. So I kind of feel that the urge to interview as many people as I can while we still are blessed to have a few of these folks around. – Stephen Moore
