Starting Your Own Financial Planning Business with Navy Veteran Forrest Baumhover
122: Forrest Baumhover enlisted in the United States Navy in 1993 as a hospital corpsman. In 1995, he accepted an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, and graduated in 1999. After receiving a commission as a Navy Supply Corps Officer, Forrest spent the majority of his career in sea duty and overseas assignments leading Sailors. About 10 years into his career, Forrest realized that he was spending a lot of time counseling Sailors on their financial issues and decided that he would make financial planning a focus for his second career. In 2013, Forrest started taking financial planning courses from the College for Financial Planning, and in 2015, he passed the Certified Financial Planner™ examination. Since then, he has established his own financial planning firm, Westchase Financial Planning, based in Tampa, Florida. Westchase Financial Planning focuses on the unique financial planning needs of:
– Servicemembers and their families as they look to separate or retire from active duty
– Real estate agents
In order to serve each of those unique communities, Forrest also writes online articles on two blogs, Military In Transition and Real Estate Agent Finances. Forrest also has an ebook that he just released on Amazon, Military In Transition’s Guide to the Survivor Benefit Plan. Oh, and he’s still on active duty, so he’s doing all of this on the side until his retirement in May 2017. In this episode, you can learn about:
– What you can do to prepare yourself for starting a business in your retirement
– The most common obstacles to success in building your own business
– How far in advance you should really start building your business
– Turn your passion into your business
– Start your business before you EAS
