188: From Combat Boots to Ranch Road Boots with Sarah Ford

How do you turn your passion into profit? Today, Joe Crane welcomes Marine veteran Sarah of Ranch Road Boots. Learn about her entrepreneurial story on this episode From Combat Boots to Ranch Road Boots with Sarah Ford. Tune in!

“You have a whole lot set up in the backend in order for you to do that, too. Don’t get too wrapped up in a business plan. Just go sell your product and you’re off to the races.” – Sarah Ford

From the Marine Corps to Entrepreneurship

Sarah joined the military in 2001 and did logistics in the marines. During her career in the corps, she was stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She also had the experience of being the Project Manager for a homebuilder. From the military, she transitioned into the civilian world and took a step forward into entrepreneurship. She studied at Harvard Business School.

Inspiration of Ranch Road Boots

When Sarah got into Harvard, she went to work at a consulting group. But she was more drawn towards entrepreneurship, so she left her job and went to work for a business owned by her friend’s dad.

During which, another friend invited her to work as the Vice President of Sales for his car company.

They ended up doing crowdsourcing automotive design. That was just around the time that Nike was offering custom shoes. She bought custom boots from them and got inspired to do the same for cowboy boots.

Success from the Business Battle Group

Sarah started Ranch Road Boots in 2012. By 2014, they opened a ready-to-wear line to scale the business better.

That year, she did a Kickstarter and competed in a Veteran Business Battle Group. Thankfully she won as the crowd favorite and was able to buy more pairs for her business. Now, they are thriving on e-commerce.
