J. Michael Haynie- Transitioning From Air Force to Syracuse University

J. Michael Haynie is an Air Force veteran who acquisition and contracting guy, spent time working as an aide to one of the 4-Star Generals and then was assigned to teach at the Air Force Academy which was a turning point for his career.  Mike enjoyed teaching and loved higher education. His transition was three days and landed where he belonged.

“Ultimately it was that assignment in a way that motivated me to transition out of the Air Force to Syracuse University.” – J. Michael Haynie, Ph.D.

Higher Education Impacting Veterans

Mike has a Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship and Business Strategy and discusses the navigation of resources and the challenges of finding the ones that are right for them.  Mike launched a small program in the business school at Syracuse called the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities. They ended building other programs for caregivers and women veterans to engage in the issues and concerns for our veterans and families.  In 2011 they launched the Institute for Veterans and Military Families.

“I’d come across some academic literature that highlighted that people with disabilities in this country turn to business ownership at a rate of seven times higher than others.” – J. Michael Haynie, Ph.D.

Civilian Credentials and Certification Program

The program Onward Opportunity is really growing.  Research showed that civilian credentials and certifications (PMP, HR Certifications) were needed so they created a program in partnership with Starbucks to provide skills training in 32 different areas. All of which lead to a different credential, license or certification.  They are currently running that program on 18 military installations and online and are all free.

“We realized through our research that one of the ways to support post service employment for service members  is to get civilian credentials and certifications in their hands.” – J. Michael Haynie, Ph.D.
