About Our Guest
Matt Koerner is a singer-songwriter with substance and depth. He makes the most out of life, its lessons, and every opportunity that comes his way. Matt learned to do this as a young child when he was growing up in a loving, close-knit family in California who was supportive of anything he endeavored to accomplish. Matts burning ambition, and sense of maturity, were further stoked during his school years as an athlete through the discipline he learned from practice and competition. Those lessons have definitely come into play as Matt launches his budding career in country music and releases his new single, “Stayed Alive in 45,” a song which comes from a very personal place that he wrote about his grandfather, Carl Joseph Turner, who at eighteen years of age fought in WWII.
The catchy mid-tempo song crafted with a powerful message, and equally powerful vocals and production, was produced by Zach Swon (The Swon Brothers). Not only is it a tribute to his late grandfather, but also a tribute to all of the men and women who have fought for our country and freedom. As we prepare to observe Veterans Day, Stayed Alive in 45 is centered on a tender conversation between a young Matt and his grandfather recounting his time served in WWII.
I always asked him about his experience in WWII and it was something he didn’t want to talk about but I was really young and I didn’t understand why he didn’t want to talk about it, so I kept asking. One day, Grandpa sat me down at his dinner table and talked to me for 3 hours about his experience and it is something I will never forget. I wanted to write a song about one of the many stories he shared with me that day, about the time when he was 18 years old and sent over to Germany to fight, added Matt. The song came to Matt one night out of the blue and reflects this unforgettable conversation, and his deep and vulnerable side as well, as the gifted storyteller and family man that he is.
